Realtime Civil Engineering worked on the Grade II listed Shaftesbury Theatre to improve the visual connectivity and enhance street-level presence.
The Theatre is an Edwardian building in the West End of London with a unique terracotta façade and was constructed in 1911. The site is located on the busy intersection of Shaftesbury Avenue and High Holborn. Realtime’s objective was to lower the rear auditorium to provide better access in and around the theatre.
Realtime summary of work scope:
- Isolation of services.
- Sheet piling to retain adjacent road network.
- Bulk excavation to new formation level.
- Demolition of the existing fabric of the building.
- Extensive substructure package.
- Underpinning of the existing structure to allow the lowering of the auditorium.
- Under slab drainage and manholes.
- Basement waterproofing installed to a Grade 3 specification combining a Type B & C system to BS 8103:2020.
- New reinforced concrete foundations and basement slab.
- Visual concrete walls/columns and sofft to the new access space.
- Basic fit out package.
